Digital Image
I found a great website with basic terminology we will be covering in class tomorrow. From the library at Cornell University:
"DIGITAL IMAGES are electronic snapshots taken of a scene or scanned from documents, such as photographs, manuscripts, printed texts, and artwork. The digital image is sampled and mapped as a grid of dots or picture elements (pixels). Each pixel is assigned a tonal value (black, white, shades of gray or color), which is represented in binary code (zeros and ones). The binary digits ("bits") for each pixel are stored in a sequence by a computer and often reduced to a mathematical representation (compressed). The bits are then interpreted and read by the computer to produce an analog version for display or printing." Other important terms to know and understand include resolution, pixel, RGB, and file format. For each of your web pages you will capture and display related images. But first, we will explore how to tell a story using still images.

This week's assignment (and over the spring break) is to create a series of 5 or 6 images based upon your class project theme. The purpose is to tell a story related to your class project in 5 or 6 pictures. Think about the theme or style you want to come across, including colors, photos, or logos. You will be incorporating some of these elements in the upcoming assignments. Also, post your images on your blogs by or before the next class.
In the example above the theme is "The Blues" and the series includes:
- Title page
- Photo of Bessie Smith
- Scanned in musical notes
- Photo of sharecroppers in the South
- Cropped photo of a railroad train
These images are related to the maint theme and may be used later as design elements for the project.
